The Church of St. Giles, originally dating from a very
early period, has been altered at different times till, with the exception
of the nave arcades, its original character has been almost entirely lost.
The church consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a tower,
heightened by the addition of a belfry stage, containing one bell.
It was effectively restored in 1875, as much as possible of the ancient
structure being retained. The unsightly modern windows have been
removed and replaced by others in the later Early English style:
all the windows in the nave and chancel are stained: there are 184
sittings.
The register dates from the year 1647. The living is a vicarage, average
tithe rent-charge £382, gross yearly value £475, including 5 acres
of glebe, with residence, in the gift of [sic.] and held since 1867
by the Rev. Christopher Bird B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge.

Hadrian Awards 2007
Gunnerton Church has been given a prestigious Hadrian Award. Hadrian Awards celebrate and promote the best in architecture and design of the built environment in the North East and Cumbria.
To be selected for an award, schemes must meet a number of criteria, including being fit for purpose, and be an innovative trail-blazer. Both these aspects of the Award and more have been met.
The award is a tribute to Vincente Stienlet of Gosforth, our architect, who was sympathetic to the heritage of the church, the needs of the congregation and the community.
